Independence Day Schedule: In observance of Independence Day, we will suspend classes from Friday evening to Sunday evening with the exception of one class on Sunday from 1-2:30pm in celebration of Kaivalya (Freedom) as described by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras.

New Class! - Friday, 7:15-8:45pm, Raja Yoga - Yoga Philosophy with Satya Tara Streib. Raja Yoga is the study of yogic philosophy and lifestyle. It includes the study of scriptures, the Yoga Sutras, lifestyle, diet and nutrition, ethics and more. Raja Yoga will help refine and polish the "Purusa" (Divine Inner Self).

Course 1: The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali - Raja Yoga, "the royal path", will first be discussed with defining the origins and roots to this ancient path. All paths of Yoga lead to the Philosophy of Yoga. Please read the following paragraph and/or meditate upon its profound meaning. We will share our thoughts of this paragraph during our first class on 6/26.

There is in us the existence of consciousness which is irrespective of this body; which is with the body, and at the same time it can be without the body, or outside it. It is that which is to be blocked. It is not the ordinary thoughts that we have to suppress. These thoughts are just nothing, a mere handful of our awareness. There seems to be a fantastic area of consciousness, unimaginable, beyond this body, with this body, but sometimes outside the body. and it is infinite. We call it "ananta," unending, infinite.

Namaste!

On behalf of all our students and teachers, I want to welcome you to Patanjali's Place - A Community Yoga Space!

In August of 2008, with the help of a small group of practitioners self-described as the "OM Team", we opened our doors at 700 Foster Street in Durham Central Park. Since our "Inaugural Class" where we welcomed over fifty practitioners to our space, we have been offering yoga most every morning, afternoon and evening, seven days a week. From Prenatal to Baby & Me Yoga, Kids and Teens Yoga, Yoga AM and PM, Yoga Lunch, Yoga Basics, Stretch and Restore, Hatha I/II, and Yin and Yang Yoga, we have attempted to design a schedule that will serve the greatest cross-section of our community as possible. I hope that one or more of our classes will benefit you.

I can truly say that the experience of opening Patanjali's Place has been both incredibly meaningful and unbelievably memorable. As I mentioned in my teacher profile, yoga has been a supportive presence in my life for over twenty years. During that time, I have experienced many opportunities for happiness and sadness, success and failure. All the while, yoga has been a place to turn, to recover and to restore. By being able to provide students an opportunity to practice and teachers an opportunity to instruct, I feel truly blessed to participate in the lives of so many. To all, I feel a deep sense of gratitude and a desire to give back to the community that has so graciously welcomed us. Throughout the year, we will interface with different community service organizations to offer needed materials. Whether in the form of coats, hats and gloves in winter, food for the community pantry, or backpacks for returning students in the fall, we want to extend our practice beyond the mat and thereby embody the spirit of living yoga.

As for you, my prayer is that if you have not yet joined us, you will very soon. Whenever you join us to practice at Patanjali's Place, may you feel welcomed, honored and appreciated!
Om shanti,
